Whether painting landscapes, interiors or figures, Jill Stefani Wagner’s primary focus is always the “light” and how it affects the subject she’s trying to capture. Working in pastel and oil, she approaches her paintings as a sculptor would, carving out nuances of highlight and shadow.
An avid traveler and plein air artist, Jill is inspired by the American landscape and that of her beloved Italy. She participates in 5-7 national plein air festivals per year, traveling throughout the country to capture the uniqueness of each venue. During the cold Michigan winters she spends time working in her studio, creating larger pieces…but still chasing the light.
Wagner’s artwork has been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions throughout the country and is included in many corporate and private collections in the United States and Europe.
Her paintings have been juried into prestigious exhibits, including American Impressionist Society, Oil Painters of America and International Association of Pastel Societies Exhibits and is often honored with awards.
One of Jill’s paintings graces the cover of the November 2016 Plein Air Magazine and her art works are often featured in their pages. Fine Art Connoisseur Magazine has highlighted her work, as has Pastel Journal and the best-selling French magazine, Practique des Arts. In 2016, 2017, 2019, 2022 and 2023, Wagner was invited Faculty at the Plein Air Convention, and also enjoys teaching workshops around the world. Recently Jill created two painting instruction videos in conjunction with Streamline Publishing.
She has been designated a Master Pastelist by Pastel Society of America and International Association of Pastel Societies, and also belongs to American Impressionist Society, Oil Painters of America, American Women Artists, Great Lakes Pastel Society and Degas Pastel Society. Her work is represented by four fine art galleries in the Midwest.
Jill Stefani Wagner was born in Port Huron, Michigan, and received a B.F.A. from The University of Michigan School of Art. She owned an award-winning advertising firm in Ann Arbor, Michigan, before “seeing the light” and becoming a full-time artist.
