About Lake District
The Lake District, also known as the Lakes or Lakeland, is a mountainous region in North West England. A popular holiday destination, it is famous for its lakes, forests and mountains (or fells), and its associations with William Wordsworth and other Lake Poets and also with Beatrix Potter and John Ruskin. The Lake District National Park was established in 1951 and covers an area of 2,362 square kilometres. It was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2017.
Overview of the Workshop
Phil Hobbs offers a ‘back to basics approach’ to the workshop, with the tuition tailored wherever possible to individual needs, therefore the workshop is suitable for beginners or more experienced painters.
Most of the painting and tuition will take place on location with the focus on gathering information through a variety of approaches, not only to produce an ‘in situ’ or ‘en plein air’ piece but to do so in such a way that enables a more considered or larger piece to be created from that information in the studio later.

Based in the centre of the English Lake District National Park, which has been recently awarded World Heritage status, you will be working amongst some of the most breathtaking scenery in the world. During this watercolour workshop we will be covering the major elements of landscape painting represented by the lakes, mountains, valleys and local architecture in this diverse yet compact area.
All the venues are chosen with care to encompass as much of the natural beauty of the Lake District, while being easily accessible. You will visit local villages and farms as well as open landscapes and lakeside settings.
Painting locations will include the villages of Ambleside and Troutbeck, Lake Windermere, Rydal Water, The Langdale Valley and many more. The actual daily locations will vary depending upon weather conditions but at this time of year there should be an extremely large choice.
As well as the usual painting gear, a waterproof jacket and strong boots should be a consideration, although these are in plentiful supply within yards of your hotel.
