I consider myself neither a pure Impressionist nor a pure Realist. My intent is to immerse the viewer into my paintings with a feeling of quiet tranquility and inclusion. I am gratified when the observer can feel the peace and visually experience the moment as presented on the canvas.
My process begins with quick ‘color note’ field study sketches. This step will remind me of the atmosphere and why I was first drawn to the subject. I couple the sketches with reference photos that will later influence me as I construct a mood and sense of place. The snapshots will also prompt a visual memorization that I heavily rely upon.
What I try to achieve is a simple impression. I allow myself liberal and lyrical translation of that simplicity. To suit the moment, I like to take pieces of what initially inspired me and compose the imagery by moving objects and creating a mood. I paint directly onto the canvas, deviating as much or as little necessary to capture the emotional impact it initially held for me.
Years of ‘plein air’ painting played an important part of understanding color, light, temperature and atmosphere. That discipline coupled with my academic background has helped guide me to where I am today.
Understanding who I am as an artist and what inspires me allows for me to let my intuition drive my work. For me, painting is not only a necessity but, it is a privilege. The importance of teaching, mentoring and continuous learning have been at the forefront of my artistic journey. With that, I have dedicated myself to share this knowledge with the artists and students I have had the privilege to teach at Tufts University Graduate School of Education, The School of The Museum of Fine Arts and at the various workshops where I am presently involved.
